The Excalibur started being built in the late 80’s. her hull was originally intended to be for a German mine sweeper; but had not been completed in time. It therefore lay dormant in storage for decades until being brought by shareholders wanting to build a 35m luxury motor yacht. The project failed and was then resold. Until the 14th December 1995 the Excalibur was operating as a liveaboard in the southern Red Sea., but was struck by an engine fire which engulfed the boat and was too big to overcome. The Excalibur now lies at a maximum depth of 21m with a length of 35m and width of 7m. It’s easy to dive the wreck as its still in once piece so navigation is simple. The wreck is not huge so take your time as you tour around. There are lots of areas for penetration, into rooms that are big and open and swarming with schools of glassfish with lionfish lurking in the area. Also look closely around the window spaces for smaller cleaner shrimps and the larger red banded shrimps that have male their home inside.
